Position: Director of the Technical-Administrative Council at FAPESP

Appointed by the Governor of São Paulo, Carlos Américo Pacheco assumed the role of new CEO of FAPESP’s Technical-Administrative Council (CTA) in July 2016, a position that had been vacant since the passing of José Arana Varela in May 2016. He was reappointed to the position in August 2019 and August 2022.
An electronic engineer from the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA), with a master’s and doctorate in Economic Science from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and post-doctoral studies from Columbia University, Pacheco served as executive secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Funding Authority for Studies and Projects (Finep), deputy secretary of São Paulo’s Economic Development Department, president of ITA, and general director of the National Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM).
Pacheco was decorated as Grand Officer of the Order of Rio Branco by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Commander of the Order of Aeronautical Merit by the Ministry of Aeronautics, and received the Grand Cross of the National Order of Scientific Merit from the Presidency of the Republic. He is a professor on leave from Unicamp’s Institute of Economics and advisor to CNPEM’s general directorate.
